01 / THE PROBLEM

Complex financial information shouldn't mean a complicated experience.

Complex financial information shouldn’t mean a complicated experience.

Bank reconciliation involves comparing financial records against bank transactions to ensure everything is accurate and accounted for.

For property managers handling multiple transactions, deposits, and payments, this process can quickly become overwhelming.

The challenge was to design an interface that could accommodate detailed financial information without sacrificing clarity or usability.

Key design challenges included:

  • Information overload: Presenting balances, transactions, and reconciliation statuses without overwhelming users.

  • Transaction matching: Helping users distinguish between matched, unmatched, and suggested transaction matches.

  • Visual hierarchy: Making important financial figures and outstanding reconciliation tasks immediately visible.

  • Workflow clarity: Creating a logical process that helps users understand what requires attention and what has already been completed.

02 / DESIGN PROCESS

Understanding the workflow before designing the interface.

Understanding the workflow before designing the interface.

My approach began with understanding the bank reconciliation process and identifying how financial information could be organised into a more intuitive user experience.

I focused on the relationship between account balances, deposits, payments, and transaction matching, considering how users would move between reviewing their financial position and taking action on outstanding items.

The design process centred around three key areas.

01 Establish a clear information hierarchy

I organised important financial figures into distinct sections, allowing users to quickly review account balances and understand the overall reconciliation status.

By grouping related information and using consistent visual patterns, I aimed to reduce the effort required to interpret complex accounting data.

02 Simplify transaction matching

A key focus was making it easier for users to identify and manage transactions requiring reconciliation.

I designed clear distinctions between transaction states and incorporated suggested matches to help users review potential matches without having to manually search through large amounts of data.

03 Create a more intuitive workflow

I focused on designing a logical flow between reviewing balances, identifying outstanding transactions, and completing reconciliation tasks.

Clear labels, structured tables, and prominent actions were used to guide users through the process and make the interface feel more approachable.

The resulting design brings structure and clarity to a traditionally complex financial workflow.

By combining clear financial summaries with organised transaction data and intuitive matching interactions, the bank reconciliation experience was designed to help property managers navigate accounting tasks with greater confidence.

The project demonstrates how thoughtful UX design can make specialised, data-heavy software more accessible without compromising the level of detail users need.
